Purpose: Help routing staff quickly move groups of students onto the correct stops, routes, and trips using tools like Group Assign, batch editing, and bus schedules.
Overview
Most routing work involves managing groups of students, not just individuals. Common tasks include:
Assigning a neighborhood to a new stop.
Moving a group of students to a different route.
Updating assignments when schools or bell times change.
EZRouting provides several tools to do this efficiently.
Assign a group of students using Group Assign
Use Group Assign when you want to select students on the map and assign them together.
Go to the Students section.
Use filters (school, grade, etc.) to narrow the list if needed.
On the map, open Group Assign:
Draw a polygon around the students you want to group.
Choose how to assign the group:
Assign them all to a specific stop.
Create a new stop and assign them to it.
Confirm and Save your changes.
After Group Assign:
Review stop and route loads.
Adjust routes if needed to account for new or moved riders.
Reassign students via bus schedules
Use bus schedules when you want to control exact trips students ride.
From the Students section:
Open the student record for one student in the group to understand the current setup.
Review the Bus Schedules tab to see:
Which trips the student is assigned to (AM/PM, days of week).
To change assignments for many students:
Use Search and Add Bus Schedules tools (if available) to:
Find routes/trips serving the right schools and areas.
Apply assignments to multiple students based on criteria.
Use batch edit for student assignments
Some configurations support batch editing for student assignments.
In the Students section, use filters to narrow to the group (e.g., all students at a particular school or grade).
Select the group of students (check boxes or selection tools).
Choose Batch Edit or Operations and look for options like:
Update transportation plans (pickup/drop‑off stops).
Adjust walker or eligible status.
Apply the changes and review a few sample students to confirm.
Common scenarios
Redrawing school boundaries or walk zones
Update boundaries/walk zones first.
Use Group Assign or batch tools to reassign impacted students to appropriate stops/routes.
Adding a new route
Create the route and trips.
Use Group Assign or bus schedule tools to move students from old routes to the new route.
Program or bell time changes
Filter students in the affected program or school.
Adjust transportation plans and bus schedules as needed.
Best practices
Work in a sandbox session when testing major reassignment strategies.
Reassign in logical chunks (by school, grade, or neighborhood) rather than all at once.
After large changes:
Run reports to check load counts by route and trip.
Spot‑check map views to ensure coverage is still reasonable.
