Create and copy data into a sandbox

What is a sandbox?

A sandbox is a copy of your routing data used for experimentation and planning. Sandboxes allow you to:

  • Test changes without affecting live routes.

  • Try different bell times, boundaries, or route configurations.

  • Prepare for major changes (e.g., summer school, new grade configurations).

Create a sandbox

  1. Go to the School Years & Sessions area in EZRouting.

  2. Select the School year or session.

  3. Click + Add Sandbox.

  4. Enter a clear name for your sandbox, such as:

    • 2025–2026 Sandbox

    • Summer 2025 Sandbox

  5. Select the data you want to copy into the Sandbox: Stops, Routes, or both.

  6. Click Create.

Copy data into your sandbox

Most sandboxes begin as copies of an existing session. If you forget to copy stops or routes into your sandbox, this data can be added later.

  1. Go to the Routes tab.

  2. Open the Operations menu and select the Clone Routes tool.

  3. Select your sandbox session as the target.

  4. Select which routes you want to copy over.

  5. Click Clone Routes and wait for it to complete.

  6. Switch to the sandbox session and confirm the data looks correct.

Tips for working in a sandbox

  • Use clear, descriptive sandbox names so staff know it is not the live year.

  • Make major structural changes (routes, stops, boundaries) in the sandbox first.

  • Once you are satisfied, you can:

    • Promote the sandbox plan by rolling from the sandbox into your production session, or

    • Manually replicate the changes in the production session.

When to remove or archive a sandbox

  • After a project or planning cycle is complete and you no longer need that sandbox:

    • Document any final decisions made from sandbox work.

    • Work with your EZRouting admin or support to archive or remove old sandbox sessions according to your district’s data retention policies.
